Culp honored as OVC Setter of the Week
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Junior setter Melanie Culp has shown improvements from week-to-week thus far in the 2009 volleyball season and was rewarded on Monday by being named the OVC Setter of the Week. This is the first time she has earned the distinction in her career.
Culp, an Indianapolis, Ind., native, dished out 124 total assists in three matches this past weekend at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. She recorded a career-high 59 assists in the Golden Eagles' five-set match against Liberty and also registered 37 assists against Louisville and 28 against Toledo. Culp also chipped in with 13 digs and a pair of blocks.
"She put great numbers this weekend, especially in the match against Liberty," said head coach John Blair.
A converted defensive specialist, Culp is visibly becoming more comfortable at the setter position. After tallying 99 total assists during her sophomore campaign, Culp has already amassed 336 assists this season.
"This is evidence of the progression of both her and the team," Blair said. "She is well aware that there is still some work to do, but this is a step in the right direction for her."
Culp, who currently ranks third in the conference with 9.33 assists/set, is a major reason why the Golden Eagles currently rank fourth in the OVC in team hitting percentage (.182).
Culp will lead Tech into conference play this weekend as the team takes on Southeast Missouri State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Eastern Illinois on Saturday at 2 p.m. Both home matches will be played at the Eblen Center.

Morning Motivation #12

Life doesn't require that we be the best, only that we try our best. Strive for excellence, not perfection.
-- H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Too often we convey to those we teach or coach that we are looking for perfection~
When we should be...
Teaching excellence- modeling excellence-

striving for excellence- expecting excellence

Remember: in striving for excellence you are giving permission to fail, to learn from that failure and strive to be better because of that failure.

In perfection there is no room for failure- the only thing we learn is that we didn't measure up, that we are no good or that we are a failure ourselves.

Strive for excellence today and be the blessing God made you to be~

Morning Motivation #11

Remember today that you have the opportunity to speak life changing words ...

Good words or bad words- both are life changing~

There are people walking around today feeling defeated, feeling unloved, feeling like they don’t measure up, feeling that they don’t fit in…

Take the time to speak words that let them know they can do anything they set their minds to, they are loved, that they just need to be who God created them to be- nothing more and nothing less and that they always have a place in Christ.

Remind them:
They are special,
not because of what they have or what they do,
but because of WHOSE they are.

Take the time today to speak life changing words~ be a blessing!

Morning Motivation #8

“To get the true measure of a man,
note how much more he does than is required of him.”
What are you doing to become the best you can be?
What "extras" are you willing to give?
Extra effort can make all the difference- will you give it?
Give all you have today and be who God made you to be~

Tough loss to Bishop Chatard

All three teams had a tough day against the 7th ranked team in 3A Bishop Chatard. Chatard came out tough in all three matches many times coming from behind to win. The Varsity team was led again by Stephanie Rogers who had 13 kills and 8 digs. Service errors and ball handling issues seemed to plaque the team the entire match. We have much to work on heading into this weeks sectional rivalry match against Cardinal Ritter. As we discuss with the girls, a loss is only good if you learn from it and become better because of it.

Varisty defeats 2008 Sectional Champion Park Tudor

Congratulations to the varsity team in the defeat of the defending Sectional Champs, Park Tudor! The team really stayed together and rallied in the 4th and 5th games to win the match. Kelsey Christiansen stepped up big for the Eagles hitting .375% with 12 kills and added 6 blocks while Abbe Huffer had nine kills and hit .389%. Maddie Anderson had 36 assists on the night with 12 digs and Jessica Bradney had a season high 23 digs. Stephanie Rogers was a forced to be reckoned with putting away 21 kills, 6 total blocks and 16 digs. What a great team effort by everyone! We have been talking quite a bit about what it means to play with purpose- and tonight they did just that!

then I realized I was somebody.
